Moral Decay: Almost half of births in Alabama were to unmarried mothers in 2012

Almost half of all births in Alabama in 2012 were to unmarried women, a higher rate than two years earlier, and some counties reported out-of-wedlock birth rates topping 70 percent.
Auburn University at Montgomery's Center for Demographic Research released its "2014 Alabama Kids Data Sheet" on Wednesday.
The report showed that 42.6 percent of live births in the state were to unmarried women in 2012, up from 41.9 percent in 2010.
Macon, Wilcox, Sumter, Dallas, Lowndes, Perry, and Greene counties had unmarried birth rates of 70 percent or more.
The lowest unmarried birth rates were in Shelby (17.7 percent), Winston (24.2 percent) and Blount (24.7 percent) counties.
The leading author of the report said high rates of birth to unmarried women are partly the result of economic hardship.
"Counties with higher rates of out-of-wedlock births tend to have lower household income and higher unemployment rates –two important factors of marriage and social mobility," Yanyi Djamba, director of the AUM Center for Demographic Research, said in a news release.
